Music Business 101

Despite all of the years I've spent singing in bands and playing music as a solo performer, I somehow missed out on a very important part of being a professional musician: The Business.

I've always been one of those musicians who claims that art is art and should be appreciated and made without the trappings of numbers, squad goals, and bottom lines. But I am starting to accept that those things, as well as other elements of business, are a part of making music and living from the creative work that you do.

And that, my friends, is what I'd like to do... I've got songs and ideas longing to see the light of day. So, I'm starting my journey, trying to learn as much as I can while not forgetting the importance of my art and my soul. Some very helpful books have been How to Make It in the New Music Business by Ari Herstand and Real Artists Don't Starve by Jeff Goins. And, of course, the inspiring and magical You Are a Circle by Guillaume Wolf "Prof. G" (which feeds my soul immensely).

I'm excited to see where all of this takes me and where it will eventually take others as well. I've got some really exciting music to share with you that is already recorded! Soon it will be out. Until then, I'll be getting an education.
